15 years ago, Jay Baerg looked like this. He was the captain of his very own “Friend Ship” along with his Summer Team mates Nat Evans and Dan Wiebe. Behind the cutting edge photo editing and perfected Sears poses was the goal of communicating life lessons to Kids week campers in a memorable way.

The three young men in the goofy “Friend Ship” photo were loaded with leadership potential that they continue to live out. Dan is a successful businessman who has generously shared his time and talents with Camp Crossroads, and Nat is full time pastor who has returned to camp as a Chapel Speaker several times. Their summer of service at Camp was a part of their discipleship journey that has continued into adulthood with the increased complexities of marriage, growing families and professional careers.

But beyond their tasks on the PeeWee weekend, Jay and Lauryn were investing in the discipleship of the next generation, even while living out their own journey of leadership and service to Christ.

Today, Jay Baerg is married to Lauryn and they have two beautiful sons.

Jay and Lauryn are both health care professionals and Lauryn serves on the Board of Directors for Camp Crossroads. Last month, all four of them attended our PeeWee & Parents Mini-Camp (for 6-8 year olds) on the May Long Weekend where Jay was a cabin leader for a group of 8 rambunctious little boys and Lauryn helped out in food services.

But beyond their tasks on the PeeWee weekend, Jay and Lauryn were investing in the discipleship of the next generation, even while living out their own journey of leadership and service to Christ.

The 2019 Summer Team members are now taking their turn at creating fun summer programs and goofy characters. The next wave of our Summer Staff arrives this week for training before family campers arrive on July 1, and they will, no doubt, bring the fun. So the next time you see our staff in a silly photo, be encouraged that, like Jay, they are loaded with leadership potential and underneath the humour is a heart for discipleship that goes far beyond this summer.
